The Wedderburn goldfield forms the northern apex of the Golden Triangle, an area famous for the discovery of an abundance of gold nuggets, many of which were of notable size. The area experienced one of the earliest gold rushes of the 1850s, which initially concentrated on alluvial workings, where gold was recovered from a thin layer of washdirt at the base of the 6 ft thick alluvium. Gold was also found in a perched iron-cemented conglomerate, the White Hills Gravel, which now occurs as a cap on top of low hills 50 ft to 150ft above the present alluvial valleys. The discovery of gold in the northerly striking quartz reefs led to a renewed gold rush from 1856. Most of the gold won from the Wedderburn field was recovered prior to 1860, but unfortunately most of this production was not officially recorded. Smaller amounts were recovered during renewed mining activity in the 1980s, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and since the 1970s with the use of metal detectors. Estimates put the total gold production from the Wedderburn goldfield at approximately 5 tons

The Hit or Miss Mine is located approximately 4 miles north west of Wedderburn and comprises three separate leases worked as one, covering 57 acres.

The surface is undulating, rising in places to hills of moderate height. Most of this country is covered with small forest trees or mallee, the latter being most prevalent.

The rocks in the vicinity of Wedderburn consist largely of soft sandstones and shales, so earthy that the term slaty can scarcely be applied to them. These beds are of Silurian age, and in appearance they greatly resemble those met with around Australiaís largest working goldfields. They are highly inclined, standing at angles of from 7o degrees to 80 degrees to the horizon, dip eastward, as a rule, strike N.5 degrees W. and are very constant. Similar strata extend northward from Wedderburn about 20 miles, westward about eight miles, eastward four to five miles, and southward for about eight miles to the granite range running between Wedderburn and Rheola.

Gold mining has been carried on about Wedderburn from very early times, as it was one of the first discovered fields. Operations were principally directed towards the alluvial deposits, and for miles around the township the shallow gullies have been dug over in search of gold. The amount of work done in this direction is astonishing, and a vast quantity of gold was easily won. The gold obtained was for the most part nuggetty, and very large pieces were not uncommon both in the alluvial diggings proper and in the surfacing on the hill sides, near the out-cropping of reefs.

As is common in many Victorian goldfields, most auriferous reefs are associated with Indicator beds, so named by the early miners because following these beds would lead to the discovery of rich gold concentrations at intersections with quartz veins. For example, the famous Welcome Stranger nugget, which contained 2,300 oz of gold, was found in close proximity to an Indicator about 9 miles away. Indicators are thin iron-rich layers of carbonaceous slate or phyllite enriched in pyrite and base metals.

RESOURCE ESTIMATE A geologist's Independent Technical Review Report of the Wedderburn Goldfield Project is available on request. This report estimates the total resource at 220,000 tons at a yield of 1/10 oz per ton. At today's prices, this equates to almost (US) $15,000,000.
