The Hilltop mine is located in the Chiricahua Mountains, Cochise County, Arizona. This is a past producing gold mine with primarily Silver, Lead, and Zinc values with minor amounts of copper and gold. Assays covering high grade zones exceed 10 percent Lead, 10 percent Zinc and 10 ounces of Silver. It consists of 100 acres of lode claims and a 4 acre mill site behind a locked gate. Past production exceeds $10 million at today's metal prices. Estimated reserves nearly $1.9 Billion at today's prices! The mine had been fully developed and mined in the past with over five miles of tunnels, drifts, adits, and two miles of raises and stopes on four levels.
A vertical ore passage connects the Kasper, Gray and Rehm levels. Fresh air cannot flow thru this area due to a cave-in at the Kasper level. Fresh air does continually ventilate the mine by flowing through the Kasper level and down through the gray adit. Specimens of Wulfenite and Cerrusite have been found in the Hilltop mine. The March-April 1983 issue of the Mineralogical Record provides a good reference for information about the specimens and pictures of the Wulfenite and other minerals found at the Hilltop mine. Several Wulfenite specimens have been recovered in recent years. If you have been looking for a past producing lode mine with plenty of ore left to mine, you'll want to take a look at the Hilltop mine.
